Ebru (water-painting or water-marbling) is a Turkish tradition that dates back to the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 16th century. The Ottomans used Ebru to decorate the spines of books with colorful designs. Ebru is the traditional art of book enriching calligraphy and art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to a special paper. Different geographies, cultures, and individuals contribute to the improvement of Ebru. Since this art brings water (source of life), dance of colors (creating amazing world), and feelings of the artist together, each work of Ebru is unique art and cannot be reproduced twice. Several patterns such as bülbül yuvasi, çiçekli, hatip, gelgit, tarakli evolved over centuries. Most popular colors in Ebru are light green, red, and yellow. The most frequently seen designs are first quarter of the moon, foliage, ornamental, and the flowers.
The workshops are especially, very popular among young generation and women. It is the perfect time to learn the colorful techniques, history, and philosophy of Turkish water marbling, Ebru. Come and learn and dive into the world of floating paints on the water. The therapeutic effects of water-marbling art therapy activities on the anxiety levels of psychiatric patients are approved.
